Once you get charged up about living into a new, changed, and joyful self, what will you be doing? So many exciting, doable things, to transform … at your unique pace. And we’ve talked about them. With this podcast and/or coaching you uncover your potential, let it shine, and realize the identity you want most in midlife-plus.
What we’ve talked about are insights, actions, and tools to carry along your path from releasing people-pleasing to then pleasing yourself for life change—without hurting others who mean the most to you in the process.
But In reviewing the year 2023 episodes I realize there’s a one+ shiny, more fun step I’ve given short shrift—kind of skimmed over it. The first part of that one step is my topic today and it’s called “the role model effect." Find out why!
Hi, and welcome to the Fire Up at 55 Plus Podcast, a show about how to put yourself first in your second act of life. I'm Certified Life and Weight Loss Coach Lori Adams, here to empower you to let go of guilt, take charge of your health, then find and fulfill your dreams. It's never too late, so let's get started. Hi! Today you're listening to the episode Have More Fun with the Role Model Effect. It's part one of two. Once you get charged up about living into a new, changed, and joyful self, what will you be doing? Well, so many exciting, doable things to transform at your unique pace. And we've talked about them. With this podcast and our coaching, you uncover your potential, let it shine, and realize the identity you want most in Midlife Plus. What we've talked about are insights, actions, and tools to carry along your path from releasing people pleasing to then pleasing yourself for a change, for life change, without hurting others who mean the most to you in the process. But in reviewing the 2023 episodes of Fire Up at 55 Plus, I realize there's a one plus shiny step I've given short shrift, kind of skimmed over it. The first part of that one step is my topic today, and I'm calling it the role model effect, used to describe the positive influence that role models can have on you, inspiring and motivating you to the long term state of momentum we need to achieve goal getting through personal growth. It's really a blast to brainstorm and envision the role models of the wider world, the people you're drawn to, and perhaps dream about being like. Think Meryl Streep, Gloria Estefan, Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Viola Davis, authors Kristen Hanna and Leanne Moriarty, newscasters Savannah Guthrie, Mika Brzezinski, Hoda Cotby and Robert Robbins, comedians Tina Fay, Lily Tomlin, and Julia Louis Dreyfus. You get the idea. This is a time to play some energetic music and let your imagination loose, thinking of your favorites, maybe like Tina Turner. Or put on some romantic or soothing tunes and conjure up a more contemplative or quietly successful and calming role model, like Brene Brown, who inspires courage in vulnerable people. Or get your little crusade stockpot out and chop up some veg, as you listen to a chef's podcast, someone like Rachel Ray or Ina Garten, if you have that aspiration. Or listen up to Gillian Michaels or Kathy Smith or Denise Austin on an audiobook or podcast if your role model has a super fit energetic identity. Or more well known women who draw your admiration. Think too of people like Marlo Thomas, still championing and fundraising for the eminently worthy St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Again, you get the idea. Find role models for your own motivation. To dive a little deeper for how the role model effect takes you off the back burner and into a more fired up life with more fun, here are practical action steps you can take. These action steps are going to take you deeper. I'm giving you these because of the short shrift I mentioned earlier. Go a little deeper by doing these things. Number one, start your own identity slash vision board. And here I mean a physical, large poster board so you could prop it up in front of you or hang it on the wall of the place you hang out most at home. Maybe by a favorite reading chair or near your desk, even on your closet door. Online Pinterest or other types of digital boards are not going to give you the feel, effect, and constant reminder that a physical board will. I use that foam core thicker poster board you can get almost anywhere like Target or a drugstore. And you can use both sides if you want to create a board picturing your rewards for goals accomplished or a board for interior design of the house you want, etc. Cut out the favorite photos of your specific few role models that you find from magazines or printouts from social media or online images. Be sure to print them out and cut and paste to your identity board. Number two, put pen to paper. You know by now from me the value of doing that. It reinforces everything and helps you to think and think outside of the box while you're physically doing that. Write captions and put them up next to the role model photos on your board. Here's an example. Say Gloria Estefan is your role model. Find the picture of her dancing, singing, and the caption you can write something like caption. She defied doctors to walk and dance again after a crushing auto accident. What a comeback, exclamation point. Or better yet for the deepest dive, put that pen to paper off your board and write some lines in a journal or just a post-it, but something long enough that you can say why you admire that person and consider them to be a true role model for your unique self. Again, an example for Estefan. You could write about what she had to overcome as a displaced Cuban in America, and the family challenges it created, or that you admire her for her persistence against all odds and stereotypes for women in the music business. And that she made that comeback to the stage in just ten months after those car accident injuries. And that now, at age 63, she has built a career of multiple music awards and record sales worldwide, plus been an actress, writer, producer, Orlando restaurant owner, and board member for Univision Communications. She has an estimated worth of more than $500 million. The key to this deeper journal type entry is her before and after story, from rags to riches and certainly not due to overnight success. When you put down these facts on paper, along with your thoughts about what she's accomplished and the things you'd like to achieve, you can think of your own story now as your before and what you want to achieve after. It certainly doesn't have to be as lofty as any of the role models we've mentioned, but if they inspire you, find what really means the most to you that's like that role model, and put that down as you write. You're going to learn a lot about yourself. Number four, and here's where I go a little bit into the plus part of the one shiny step that you'll hear about more in part two. It's more of a splash than a deeper dive because it's going to make your new transformed life a lot of fun. Let me explain. It's the segue from role models you admire to your own peeps, your people. See, you can play Gloria's music or watch her videos and see her image on the identity board you've made. And that's truly inspirational and really worth doing. But Gloria is probably not going to invite you over for a drink, to go to dinner, learn salsa dancing or pickleball. So the next best thing, note probably the very best thing, is to surround yourself with like-minded people to realize the transformation you're going after. When you think of those role models, can you also come up with someone already in your circle of friends or a lively and happy or successful woman you're already acquainted with? Because the shiny step will immerse you in the identity and life changes you want. You'll be surrounding yourself with like-minded people. Now, that will mean some of the discomfort that comes with life change, and we've talked about that a lot too. It will mean releasing some people who aren't interested in your best type of life activities, or certainly diminishing the amount of time you spend with them. For a great real life example of this, I encourage you to go back to the podcast episode with Jen Rowe, who talks about changes in her friendships good and bad, and her attitude about it along the way, as she lost a lot of weight, curtailed her drinking, and became a runner with a fun and fabulous group of new, like mended friends over time. And now Jen is a role model, certainly for me. And I know for the countless new runners and comeback runners she is motivating. But for today, soon, please get that poster board out with colorful construction paper, markers, glitter tape, and such. Have more fun imagining and stepping into your extraordinary identity with this playful project that is more in-depth than you might think. Write some background about your role models and why you chose them, and how you can accomplish any success when you put your mind to it in a deeper way. You'll recall those deep desires anytime you look at this sparkling vision board. Go with it and abandon limiting beliefs. Dream the way you did when you were younger, and the whole world was open to you. It will open up your eyes to what's still possible at any age for a more fun life, where you'll likely become a role model for other women too. I didn't start today with a quote, but you know how I love one that goes along with my topic. So here's one to close the conversation from Jane Fonda. A vision board serves as a compass, she said, guiding us towards our dreams and reminding us of the power we hold within ourselves to create the life we desire.
