Hi, and welcome to the Fire Up at 55 Plus Podcast, a show about how to put yourself first in your second act of life. I'm Certified Life and Weight Loss Coach Lori Adams, here to empower you to let go of guilt, take charge of your health, then find and fulfill your dreams. It's never too late, so let's get started. Hi, it's Lori, welcoming you to episode number 82, titled What Mentors Know For Sure. Cheers and welcome back. As promised in the What They Know For Sure podcast recently, today you're gonna hear some relatable on the money quota bulls and illustrations from mentoring to light up your pathway for best life change at Midlife Plus. I'm gonna jump right in with some quotes and brief introductions about the speakers, just a few, and the context that shaped their wisdom. First, and these are in no particular order having to do with what field they're in, I've got Dottie Herman. She is a very successful real estate entrepreneur, one of actually the richest self made women in America. Her quote highlights the power that comes with age, wisdom, and self acceptance. She said Age is a gift. It is the time to embrace your power, wisdom, and confidence. If you need some inspiration to get off the back burner and start now, think about Dottie taking that wisdom at her age as a gift. Then from Catherine Gray, she's an author and an award winning journalist. She writes on the tough subject of sobriety and then personal growth along with self worth. Her quote encourages women to break free from the habits and narrative that age limits their potential. She says change your narrative, you are not too old, and it's never too late. Then from Helen Fielding, best known for creating Bridget Jones diary, her writing often addresses the pressures of societal expectations that we all feel. Her quote reinforces that true beauty is inner strength and vitality rather than outward appearance. Her mentoring quote is what you look like on the outside isn't what makes you beautiful, it's your spirit that truly shines. Here are a few more from people who take on coaching people about their self-worth. One is from Martha Beck, I'm sure you've heard of her. She's the well-known author, Harvard trained sociologist and life coach that first appeared on Oprah years ago as far as coming into awareness of people around the world. She's known for her books on finding one's true path, and that's what we're talking about. Her quote encourages stepping away from fear and making courageous choices. Martha does say take action, any action, unquote. Move away from what you fear. Then I'm going to share one from Jen Sinchero. This is really for recovering people pleasers, which is something that really desirably should be given up, at least in theory, at least in awareness, to change your life and get off that back burner. Author of You Are a Badass, a lot of badass books, her coaching centers on financial success and personal empowerment. This quote from her is about owning one's power to change any situation. Jen says, quote, you're responsible for what you say and do. You are not responsible for whether or not people freak out about it. Unquote. And of course that's important because moving in to your journey, getting ready to step on that path and then actually doing it, will often bring up criticism from others, concern from others, people who can't help but tell you that you're changing. And just to be aware that that's gonna come up, and you're not responsible for them. You're only responsible for yourself and for your own life journey without self-judgment. So I'm gonna continue with across all the quotes, and I certainly had many more I could have mentioned from well-known figures, authors, people who are activists, and especially mentors, including the life coaches, many consistent and powerful themes for overcoming negativity and achieving your personal growth have emerged, and it's important to understand the summary of the best advice to get you going. So, here's that summary. One, embrace change and take action. So to take action and really lead in to that change, do not wait for the perfect moment or the right feeling. Take action, even if it's small. We've said that before. Because embracing uncertainty and stepping out of your comfort zone are critical to personal growth. And as long as you know it doesn't need to be perfect, in fact, if you try to be perfect, that's gonna make it worse. But just to take a step leads to another, well, that'll get you going and growing. Next, focus on positivity and gratitude. So you know the negative is gonna come up. We've talked about that many times. And if you can shift your mindset from what's wrong to what's possible, instead of dwelling on the negativity, focus on what you can create, as we've mentioned before from Marie Forleot. Everything is figure outable. So focus on the good you can find. You make it a challenge to find that good, and the people who uplift you. Wayne Dyer, the spiritual advisor and prolific author, much admired, who is no longer with us, said change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change. Number three, own your story and inner power. Be unapologetically yourself. Don't let societal expectations or the opinions of other people define you, as we've said, embrace your strength, your past experiences, and what makes you unique, the potential you're feeling inside of you, especially in the face of adversity. Number four, set boundaries and prioritize self-care. Saying no to others, it really is sometimes necessary in order to say yes to yourself, and that is the new path that you're navigating. Healthy boundaries are really essential for keeping emotional well being, for maintaining it, and tamping down the negativity at bay. So a quote that reinforces this is from Cheryl Richardson, and you might remember her as a very early life coach, kind of like Martha Beck, seen on Oprah. And she said about boundaries If you avoid conflict to keep the peace, you start a war inside yourself. Number five, learn from failure and let go of the past. Know that failure is a teacher, not an endpoint. You know you acknowledge your past hurts, but you don't allow them to define your present or future. Self forgiveness, lack of self judgment, and self compassion are key to moving you forward. Jack Canfield, who I'm sure you'll recognize as the prolific author of Chicken Soup for the Soul, and then he's gone on to be such a successful life coach, says don't worry about failures. Worry about the chances you miss when you don't even try. Number six, you can nurture your confidence through knowledge and preparation and recalling what you have been good at in the past. If you remember Nina Totenberg, who's still around, long time NPR reporter, covered, oh my goodness, the courts, politics, everything for years and years. She used her knowledge, her confidence in knowledge, her preparation in order to act with confidence. And her quote is knowledge is a source of confidence, which is the best shield against negativity. So anything you can bring in from your expertise or from what you've just learned over your life, you will have a shield against negativity and feel more confident. And finally, number seven, focus on your self-worth and inner strength. True beauty, value, and worth come from within. Cultivate a positive relationship with yourself by recognizing your inner power, wisdom, and resilience. You're strong, and it's time to release that strength. Again, Helen Fielding said, What you look on the outside isn't what makes you beautiful. It's your spirit that truly shines. So, as a quick wrap up, the most effective advice converges on a few key points that we've just gone over. Mainly, seize the initiative and cultivate a positive mindset as much as you can, because the negative's always going to come in to challenge you. Own your own narrative and be sure to set healthy boundaries. Learn from your past without dwelling on the negativity in it. No judgment. Build your confidence through action and what you know to be true, and always recognize your intrinsic worth. This will empower you, particularly as an aging woman, to rise above negativity, embrace your change, and live authentically the life you want, the person you want to be, your identity. And you know, since I've just shared quotes and if you're listening to me regularly, I love quotes. And this is one to close this episode. It's from Cheryl Straid. You probably remember her as an author best known for her self-discovery best-selling book and subsequent movie Wild. That star Reese Witherspoon. Cheryl said, quote, you will learn a lot about yourself if you stretch in the direction of goodness, of bigness, of kindness, of forgiveness, and of emotional bravery. And I'm going to close with what mentors know for sure, what they know for sure, and even what Oprah knows for sure, I know you can tap into your potential and your desire at any age to discover what you know for sure for your best life ever. Admidlife, I have seen it happen, and I can't wait to see what happens for you. So, no one-on-one coach in your life yet? No problem.
